Noni Juice - Reap the Benefits That Mother Earth Sows

Before I moved to Costa Rica, I had never heard of Noni Juice. Wandering around the Tamarindo Feria one lovely Saturday morning, we happened upon a delightful man named Pedro, who was selling organic yoga clothing. While admiring his wares, we discussed organic products and he started to tell us about the wonders of Noni Juice. Intrigued, we bought a bottle to find out if there was any merit to his claims.

The noni or morinda plant is a tropical evergreen tree that grows in the mineral rich volcanic soil of Central America, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Asia, Australia, South America and the Caribbean. The tree bears a fruit about the size of a potato that can be picked when it is a golden yellow. The noni fruit is washed and allowed to dry and then placed in a sealed glass jar in the full sun to ferment over a six to eight week period. Juice seeps out of the fruit while it is fermenting and then the sediment is strained and the juice is placed into a sterilized jar. After the juice is pasteurized, by placing the open jar in a pot of boiling water for 30 minutes, the pH level is tested, optimally registering at 3.5 or less. Viola, the noni juice is ready to transform your health!

High in Vitamin C, Niacin, Potassium, Iron and Peroxeronine, Noni juice provides a plethora of amazing benefits to those who ingest it. At first, you must get past the strong odor and flavor. One can get very creative masking the pungence in your meals. My “modus operandi” is to add two teaspoons to my frozen breakfast smoothie every morning while my fiancé, Mike, just adds a capful to chilled water twice a day.

Used for centuries in eastern medicine and by alternative, holistic healers, Noni’s reputation has spread worldwide for its healing capabilities and preventative nature. So, exactly what can Noni juice do for you? Noni juice works by stimulating the immune system, regulating cell function and cellular regeneration of damaged cells. Researchers studying the affects of Noni juice consumed by test participants noted the following benefits: increased energy, mental acuity, enhanced muscle mass, sexual enhancement, reduced stress and an overall sense of well-being.

In addition, Noni has been proven to relieve symptoms associated with asthma, allergies, arthritis, depression, menstruation, stroke, Alzheimer’s and Diabetes, types 1 and 2. It has had positive results treating fibromyalgia, heart disease, HIV, Multiple Sclerosis and obesity. The biologically active components of Noni juice help to regulate melatonin and serotonin, improving sleep quality. It has also improved the lives of those afflicted with high blood pressure, pain, including headaches, and kidney health issues. I won’t bore you with scientific jargon as to “the how”, but proponents of Noni juice claim it kills cancer cells, it stops the spread of cancer, it stimulates white blood cells and other parts of the immune system and takes part in a process that enlarges cell membranes so they can better absorb nutrients. Cancer patients have indicated ingesting Noni juice reduces the severity of the side effects of chemotherapy. That’s quite a resume for a seemingly benign little fruit! It should be noted however, contraindications of Noni juice have been detected and those with kidney problems, high potassium levels or liver disease, as well as women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should consult with a doctor prior to drinking Noni juice.

According to Dr. Neil Solomon, author of “Noni Juice: How Much, How Often, For What?” the recommended dosage is to start out with a 3 day test phase, consuming a teaspoon prior to breakfast and another teaspoon prior to dinner. Then, he advises to take a “loaded serving” for one month that consists of 2 ounces before breakfast and 2 ounces before dinner daily. During the next phase, the therapeutic serving is recommended for months 2 through 6. This consists of 2 ounces in the morning and 1 ounce in the evening. Finally, from month 7 on, the maintenance/preventative phase occurs whereby recommended consumption is an ounce in the morning and an ounce in the evening.

I am grateful that I happened upon Noni juice and believe so vehemently in its healing qualities that Revive Wellness Center stocks jars of Noni juice on our shelves. We inform our clients of the benefits of Noni juice on a regular basis and encourage the usage of Noni juice to those seeking physical relief or just looking to improve their overall health.
