Liisa's 30 Days at Revive Wellness Center at Langosta Beach Club in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Inspired by the new energy at Revive Wellness Center at Langosta Beach Club, I convinced owners Jackie and Mike to let me be the guinea pig for their host of wellness offerings here in Tamarindo. What better way to promote their new business than by showing a real person enjoying the benefits of their services?

Motivated by their tag line “Healthy. Balanced. Living.” we came up with a 30-Day Challenge that would allow me to reach some personal health and fitness goals. Instead of the typical “go hard or go home” for 30 days mentality, we established some specific, attainable objectives that are in line with their philosophies on fitness and which fit into my busy lifestyle as a working mom – in Costa Rica mind you, but still...

Why a 30-Day Challenge at Revive Wellness Center at LBC?

People decide to do 30-Day Challenges for many reasons. My family is leaving Tamarindo in about a month. The task of packing up a family is time-consuming. In times of stress, fitness can end up on the backburner, just at the time when stress-relief is most needed. I wanted to avoid this. Plus, any reason to visit beautiful Langosta Beach Club is a bonus, especially if I get to share it with visitors to Tamarindo as well as locals.

Yoga and Surfset Fitness at the Core of the Challenge

My challenge is simple. It has to be. I am a busy mom and we are in Costa Rica – I need time for Pura Vida living. For 30 days, I will practice yoga a minimum of 5 times a week and take Surfset fitness classes a couple of times a week. If you haven’t yet seen the Surfset boards at Revive Wellness Center, you need to check them out. Whether or not you are an avid surfer, these boards provide an amazing functional workout that will give you killer core stability in no time.

I will also follow nutritional advice that will help me to change some poor habits that I have adopted. I will stay hydrated and I will check-in with Mike periodically.

My Goals for the Yoga and Surfset Fitness 30-Day Challenge

I’m not going to lie. If I look better in a bikini at the end of the month, and if my measurements are smaller and my body fat percentage lower, I will be thrilled. But I do have other goals (really, I do).

I am a recovering long distance runner and a binge yogi. I have been addicted to boot camp style workouts and strength training. However, over the last year the extent of my fitness routine has been daily 5 km walks on the beach, erratically replaced with the odd run or yoga class. I have nowhere to go but up.

So my goals for this month include:

Yoga pose goal: I want to do a classical yoga headstand in the middle of the room, without the support of the wall, for no other reason than to conquer it.

Yoga principles goal: I want to focus on two yoga principles this month, practice and non-attachment. These will both be useful in this busy month in which I will no doubt have ups and down, anxieties and misgivings about leaving beautiful Tamarindo, Costa Rica. These two principles will help with “control over the fluctuations of the mind”, or so says Patanjali’s The Yoga Sutras.

Core strength goal: A two-year-old running overuse injury has been nagging at my lower back. It is almost certainly caused by weak and imbalanced core muscles. Working hard on those wobbly but fun Surfset boards, will certainly help me to strengthen the essential muscles that support my back, and I hope reduce the discomfort.

Sport specific goal: I want to pop up fast on a surfboard once in my life. It would be nice if I were more than 10 feet from the shore before I got to ride the (remainder of the) wave.

The results of the yoga and Surfset Fitness 30-Day Challenge

You will have to stay tuned to find out the results of the challenge, as will I. I am looking forward to trying the new Surfset Fitness workouts, deepening my yoga practice, enjoying the ride. Jackie and Mike have some other surprises in store for me and I promise to share those with you too. In the meantime, get yourself to Revive Wellness Center at Langosta Beach Club, and see for yourself what Tamarindo’s newest fitness facility and spa has for you. Did I mention they are opening a spa? We can talk more about that in a future post.
